Carrier-Belleuse s’inscrit ici dans la tradition des bacchantes en terre cuite qui ont fleuri en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, notamment sous l’impulsion de Clodion et de son élève JosephCharles Marin. Le sourire espiègle de notre ménade, les lourdes grappes qui encadrent son visage et la peau de bête dont elle se couvre font écho à la Bacchante courant de Clodion (musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris, inv. J 203) ou à sa voluptueuse Érigone (musée du Petit Palais, Paris, inv. SDUT1435).
Marin développe ce thème en de charmants petits bustes dont plusieurs exemplaires ont été réunis lors d’une précédente exposition monographique (Galerie Patrice Bellanger, Paris, 1992).
