Tels des héros mythologiques, les saintes et saints de l’Eglise Catholique, sont vénérés, soit à l’endroit de leur mort, ou de leur tombe, ou de leur martyre. Les différentes régions de France ont chacune leurs saints plus spécifiques. Les objets les ayant touchés sont aussi chéris par les croyants.

L’Eglise leur confère le pouvoir de chasser le démon et de guérir de nombreuses maladies.
