Le sujet intimiste d’une jeune femme à sa toilette – surprise alors qu’elle se dévêt – sied parfaitement à l’esthétique de Carrier-Belleuse. Le chat, qui vient se lover autour de ses jambes nues, donne une tournure licencieuse à cette scène innocente de prime abord.
En 1874, Prosper d’Epinay (1836-1914) expose au Salon un marbre intitulé la Ceinture dorée dont le thème et la composition rappellent étonnamment ceux de notre sujet.
Une terre cuite du même modèle a figuré dans la vente après décès de Carrier-Belleuse (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 19-23 décembre 1887, lot 77, H. 80 cm).
