Carrier-Belleuse qui, selon Paul Mantz, « a été pendant longtemps l’infatigable artisan des élégances souriantes et des grâces mouvementés… » 1, excelle également dans la représentation d’une expression introspective non dénuée de gravité. La composition, comparable à celle d’un buste en terre cuite figurant également dans l’exposition (n° 10), semble dériver de la Nymphe maritime de Carrier-Belleuse, dont un exemplaire en bronze surplombe la fontaine de la place du Théâtre-Français, Paris (1872).
Un buste en marbre du même modèle se trouve au Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (inv. 2018.80 ;

H. (buste) : 61 cm), un autre au Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen ‒ Neue Pinakothek, Munich (inv. B 777).
