Sous le ciseau habile de CarrierBelleuse et de ses praticiens, ce bloc de marbre de Carrare prend vie et le grain d’une peau veloutée vient animer sa surface d’une blancheur immaculée.
Le papillon, qui à l’instant s’est posé sur l’épaule gauche de la jeune femme, évoque certainement les amours mythologiques de Cupidon et Psyché.
Un buste en terre cuite intitulé Papillon, peut-être le modèle de notre marbre, figura à la vente après décès de CarrierBelleuse (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 19-23 décembre 1887, lot 133, H. 60 cm)
