La composition de ce portrait de fantaisie – un visage songeur, légèrement incliné à gauche, et le regard porté vers le bas ‒ semble dériver de la Nymphe maritime de Carrier-Belleuse, bronze commandé par Gabriel Davioud pour sa fontaine de la place du Théâtre-Français, Paris (1872). L’attitude est comparable au buste de Flore, dont un exemplaire en marbre est également présenté dans cette exposition (n° 6). Par ailleurs, la référence aux modèles français du XVIIIe siècle, notamment aux portraits de jeunes femmes peints par JeanBaptiste Greuze, est saisissante.
