Carrier-Belleuse représente une belle endormie les yeux mi-clos ; le sourire qui se dessine sur ses lèvres donne à imaginer dans quelles voluptueuses rêveries elle est plongée. Le sculpteur transcrit ici à la perfection, au travers de la générosité des formes féminines, le délicieux abandon du modèle auquel son pendant, le Réveil les yeux ouverts sur le monde, fait écho.
Un exemplaire en terre cuite du Sommeil a figuré dans la vente après décès de Carrier-Belleuse (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 19-23 décembre 1887,lot 136, H. 60 cm).
