Miniature érotique représentant un couple d’Européens

Cette amusante miniature représente un couple d’Européens nu, enlacé sur un palanquin richement orné. Ils cheminent, portés par quatre femmes dans un pré fleuri bordé d’eau, s’adonnant aux plaisirs de l’amour.

Les personnages sont coiffés à l’européenne, y compris les porteuses, aussi vêtues de robes rappelant celles des cours occidentales. Les amants sont nus mais encore parés de bijoux indiens : colliers, boucles d’oreille et bazu band. L’Européen -ou Topiwallah- même pendant l’acte, garde son topi ou chapeau et sa longue perruque bouclée, ces deux attributs étant les plus typiques de la garde-robe occidentale du point de vue de l’Orient.

Un texte en écriture devanagari noire sur fond jaune accompagne la scène, et nomme l’action. Ici la position est nommée « gardienne du bonheur » ou « sukhpāl » en référence au palanquin des mariages. Il s’agit probablement d’une illustration d’un Kâmashâstra, ou recueil consacré à l’éloge et à la description des pratiques de l’amour, dont le Kamasutra est le plus

connu. Le texte semble ici donner des indications précises des positions que les amoureux doivent adopter.

Des miniatures provenant probablement de la même série, dont une très proche illustrant aussi une scène érotique, sont publiées dans : Rawson P (1979), L’Art Érotique de l’Inde, Londres : Blacker Calmann Cooper Ltd / Paris : Éditions du Chêne, n°35 et 36.
D’après Rawson, les albums de miniatures érotiques, très répandus en Inde, étaient destinés à divertir les familles aristocratiques. Elles pouvaient également avoir pour vocation de stimuler les amoureux dans leurs propres ébats.

La représentation d’Européens dans ces images érotiques, témoigne de l’évolution de la vision, au départ intriguée et plutôt documentaire des firangi, vers une vision fantasmée et parfois ironique ou caricaturale qui se met peu à peu en place vers le XVIIIe siècle.
