Cet amusant dessin nous montre quatre personnages Européens, dont trois aux yeux bleus profonds, qui semblent en pleine conversation ou négociation. Ces dessins constituent de véritables portraits probablement de personnages connus du peintre, pris sur le vif et mis en couleurs postérieurement.
Devant l’un d’eux, un casque colonial typique de cette période est posé. Il est ceint du puggaree (tissu très épais inspiré des turbans sikhs), qui s’affinera par la suite pour n’être plus qu’une bande de tissu au XXe siècle.
