Cette œuvre est une partie du Monument à Gambetta, tel qu’il fut réalisé puis placé à Bordeaux.

Dalou modifie son projet de 1884 et travaille en association avec l’architecte Jean-Camille Formigé. La figure de Gambetta est installée sur un piédestal, les groupes de la Sagesse soutenant la liberté et de La Défense de la Patrie encadrent le drapeau français et les armes de Bordeaux, placés à la base.

Exécutée début 1901, l’esquisse du Monument à Gambetta est acceptée dès mars par le comité bordelais. Dalou parvient à achever la statue de Gambetta ainsi que la Sagesse soutenant la Liberté. La Sagesse, représentée en Minerve casquée, retient la chute d’une Liberté coiffée du bonnet phrygien.

Le 7 avril 1902, quelques jours avant sa mort, Dalou confie l’exécution du monument au sculpteur Camille Lefèvre, assisté des deux praticiens de Dalou, Auguste Biaggi et Auguste Becker. L’inauguration, en présence du président Loubet, se déroule le 25 avril 1905.
